BY NO ONE’S standards has this year’s US Open been a classic.

Rain has severely hampered several days play, resulting in the men’s final taking place on Monday for the second year running and Wimbledon’s grand fromages looking smug.

The re-emergence of Kim Clijsters and the semi-final histrionics of Serena Williams have provided the only major notes of interest.

That is until last night’s semi-final between Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.

Years of tennis players attempting to play the ball through their legs eventually proved worthwhile, as Federer did this.
